A mechanical temp gauge doesn't bring coolant to the gauge. It uses a probe into the coolant in the engine that is filled with mercury or a similar substance that substance travels through the tube, usually 6 feet on most gauges, and gauge operates through that. Mechanical gauges are accurate but are a PITA to install in many cases.
